What is Pollution Prevention (P2)?
P2 means making changes in operational procedures, processes and improvements in housekeeping or management techniques that reduce potential or actual releases of pollutants to the overall environment (air, water and land).
P2 includes a wide array of opportunities for both businesses and private residences. Focus on source reduction as a first step. If that is not possible, then try recycling or reuse to identify waste minimization opportunities.
P2 in Arizona can include any of the following:
- Source reduction
- Toxic substance use reduction
- Recycling of wastes or secondary materials
- Reuse of materials
- Waste minimization
- Chemical substitution
- Toxic substance volume reduction

|Arizona Pollution Prevention Week
|The third week of September each year is celebrated as National Pollution Prevention (P2) Week. National P2 Week is a time for consumers and businesses to learn and recognize that it makes both common sense and economic sense to protect our environment by using fewer toxic chemicals, reducing water and energy consumption, generating less solid and hazardous waste, and reducing air pollution. P2 Week highlights the efforts of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, its partners, states and the public in making pollution prevention a cornerstone of sustainability.
